BT Sport and Sky Sports consulted on freelance pay rates, suggests email

Staff at BT Sport consulted with rivals at Sky about pay rates for freelance workers in 2018, according to an email seen by the Financial Times that appears to suggest collusion between the broadcasters. In an email from July 2018, shared with the FT by two separate individuals, a senior executive at BT Sport wrote: "After consultation with Sky Sports, BT Sport will increase the daily rate . . . by £10 per day to £380.". BT Sport said: "While we take these allegations extremely seriously, we are unable to comment due to the ongoing investigation with the CMA." Sky declined to comment. "In the email, the BT Sport executive added that, following the consultation with Sky Sports, the broadcaster would increase pay by the same £10 figure for other positions, including"studio production EVS Ops", 'Gallery only operators" and "Playing only" workers, and that all of these rises would be "Effective from 1st August". A number of freelance technical operators who work for the main sports broadcasters in the UK have told the Financial Times that it has been common practice for Sky to increase its rate by £10, followed by other broadcasters.
