Chancellor announces £1m Manchester Prize for AI
The chancellor has announced an annual £1m prize for the most ground-breaking research into artificial intelligence. Jeremy Hunt said he wanted the "Best AI research to happen in the UK". His Budget also announced about £900m to set up a AI research resource and develop an "Exascale" supercomputer, with initial investments this year. Capable of at least a quintillion operations per second, exascale computers can be used for forecasting weather or modelling climate change, as well as AI. The chancellor also announced a £2.5bn 10-year research and innovation programme for quantum computers. In the Budget, the chancellor said: "We'll work at pace with the Intellectual Property Office to provide clarity on IP rules so that generative AI companies can access the material they need." Some rights holders fear this means the government will revisit a stalled plan to provide an exemption to copyright rules to let AI companies scrape content.
